Grade 7 CBC Lesson Plan on the Digestive System

Theme: Science & Technology

Sub-theme: Human Anatomy

Topic: The Digestive System in Humans

Duration: 40 minutes

Class Level: Grade 7

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define the digestive system and identify its importance in the human body.
  2. Name the major organs of the digestive system and describe their functions.
  3. Illustrate the process of digestion from ingestion to excretion.
  4. Relate the importance of good nutrition to proper functioning of the digestive system.

Key Competencies

  • Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Understanding the flow of digestion.
  • Digital Literacy: Use of digital animations or videos for visualization.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Group discussions and presentations.

Learning Resources

  1. Diagrams of the digestive system (charts or digital).
  2. Digital animations or videos showing the digestive process.
  3. Flashcards for organ names and functions.
  4. Writing materials for learners.

Lesson Development

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Begin by asking learners guiding questions:
    • What happens to food after you eat it?
    • Why is digestion important?
  • Show a simple animation or diagram of the human digestive system to capture attention.
  • State the day’s objectives.

2. Lesson Activities (25 minutes)

Activity 1: Naming the Organs (10 minutes)

  • Use a chart or animation to point out the key organs: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, and anus.
  • Briefly explain each organ’s function.

Activity 2: Tracing the Digestive Process (10 minutes)

  • Break the class into groups of 4-5 learners.
  • Provide each group with a set of flashcards showing the organs of the digestive system and ask them to arrange the organs in the correct sequence of digestion.
  • Guide learners in understanding the functions of enzymes, bile, and other digestive fluids.

Activity 3: Class Discussion on Nutrition (5 minutes)

  • Ask learners how the food we eat affects the digestive system.
  • Link the importance of a balanced diet to maintaining a healthy digestive process.

3. Conclusion (5 minutes)

  • Recap the key points of the lesson using a quick oral quiz:
    • Name two organs in the digestive system.
    • What happens in the stomach?
    • Why is the small intestine important?
  • Allow learners to ask questions.
  • Provide a real-life connection: Discuss the importance of chewing food thoroughly.

Assessment

  1. Formative Assessment: Observe learners during group activities for participation and understanding.
  2. Exit Ticket: Learners write down one organ and its function on a slip of paper before leaving class.

Home Assignment

  1. Draw and label the digestive system in your exercise book.
  2. Write a short paragraph explaining what happens to food in the stomach.

Reflection for Teacher

  • Did the learners actively participate?
  • Were the objectives achieved?
  • What adjustments should be made for future lessons?

This lesson plan integrates the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) approach by engaging learners in active participation, critical thinking, and real-life application.
